Community Q&A: How to handle pricing objections
In this community Q&A series I answer questions that come up in my Facebook group and outline my thoughts on what people are asking.
If you want to submit a question for me to answer for this series make sure to join the Facebook group and post your question!
In this post we look at how to handle pricing objections from prospective clients.
Here are my thoughts on this:
Are you charging for your consults? If not, you should be to avoid situations like this (read this post on why it’s so important to charge for your initial consultations)
You may need to review your website.
Does it accidentally communicate that you are inexpensive and/or will do small jobs?
Does it explain your design process and how you work?
Does it talk about your fees?
Does it clearly appeal to the right level of client or does it have a ‘DIY’ look about it?
Is it aspirational for the type of client you are trying to attract?
Improve your sales skills
once you're at an initial consultation you may find you need to improve your sales skills - here’s some more information to help you improve your sales skills
Overall it sounds like you need to be going after a higher calibre of client. Charging for your initial consult weeds out the complete time wasters, but won't get rid of all of them.
This post about the 12 skills interior designers need to succeed may be helpful to read next.
I also think setting expectations around pricing and what things really cost is an important part of what you share in your free content - e.g. via Instagram or blog posts. That way people will come to your sites and look around and see that you quite clearly aren't the right designer for them and go looking elsewhere for more 'DIY' type of client.

What I've said in this post isn't directed at the person who wrote the post, it’s just a chance to write out my thoughts on the topic.
