Find more time (by improving your business systems)

The faster you can do your work, the more money you will make a designer. 🤑

The secret to this is to set up better business systems.

Sounds boring - but it will be life changing if you start doing it.

So many designers I meet do the same repetitive tasks from scratch every time they come across them.

Instead of working like this, take a bit of extra time up front to set up a system for that task so that the next time you come across it you’ve got a template or step by step process that’s ready to implement (and will save you time).

Time is money as a designer.

The faster you can do your work, the more clients you can take on and the more money you will make!

Here are some ideas for how to get started with setting up business systems.

Step 1: Review your current workflow

  • Track and review a typical workday or week

  • Note down all the regular tasks and activities you do

  • Pay particular attention to how you currently manage administrative tasks, client onboarding, project management, client communications and creative processes

Step 2: Identify Repetitive or Time Consuming Tasks:

  • Take note of tasks that are repetitive or time consuming

  • Examples include:

    • sending similar emails

    • invoicing

    • updating project status

    • client onboarding

    • social media content creation

    • generating design documentation

Step 3: Identify tools that will help you streamline these repetitive tasks

  • This could include:

    • writing some email templates**

    • using an automated invoicing system

    • project management software

    • social media scheduling tools

    • templates designed specifically for interior designers**

Step 4: Implementation

  • Develop a plan for incorporating new tools into your workflow

  • This might involve setting up new software, drafting some template emails or customising a pre-made template

  • Start with one small, manageable change to your workflow in the upcoming week (i.e. take action on this!)

Step 5: Continuous Improvement

  • Continue to look for ways to improve and streamline your business processes using this same method every week

  • Each week plan to add one new system to your workflow.

  • This means by the end of the year you’ll have 52 new systems implemented!

  • Gradually implement more systems = your business will run more smoothly

Time is money!

Implementing systems takes time up front but saves you heaps of time over the long term.

And time is money as a designer.

The faster you can do your work, the more money you will make!
