How to stand out from the crowd of interior designers

When it comes to growing a profitable design business there are three key things that I think will set you apart from other designers. It’s all how you stand out from other designers through your mindset, knowing your community, and being everywhere!

But how do you do that?

Your mindset and how you show up

If you aren't willing to do the difficult things that others ARE willing to do then you will only get so far. Push past fear, self-doubt and imposter syndrome and just do it anyway! That is probably my biggest tip and you could stop reading right here if I'm honest.

Action, Action and (more!) Action is what is ultimately going to bring you success. You have to get over yourself and stop taking yourself so seriously. Don't worry about what people think about you - start behaving like that amazing business owner you desperately want to be and you will eventually become that person.

And if the idea of that scares you at the moment or you feel imposter syndrome as you're only just getting started - then do it anyway and do it scared! This is the only way to get over imposter syndrome and take it from me, that feeling of being scared and feeling like an imposter never goes away. I still get those feelings even at my stage in business.

Know your community better than they know themselves

You need to understand their problems and challenges and wants and needs at both a head and a heart level. This means understanding the way they talk about their problems to other people but also how they feel about their problems internally. The better you can get at understanding and using the words that your potential clients use to describe these problems the easier it will be to market your business. It also makes crafting content so much easier as potential clients will feel like you 'get them' (because you do!).

Connection comes from being relatable to your community. So show your face, be on video, be authentic, share your values and philosophies. Never try and be someone you're not.

Some people will love you, some people will not love you and that's completely fine!

Be everywhere at all times

Show up everywhere that people are hanging out who might be your ideal customers - and do it consistently.

I know it might seem overwhelming to be posting daily on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn and now Clubhouse as well - but if you do that and start creating content for every platform (all the time) then this is how you grow your top of funnel audience (i.e. those who start to know about you) and you can then start to bring them in to your world and let them get to know the real you (which is how they will eventually become your clients).

Don't make excuses for not having time to be creating content for social media. The only way to stay top of mind these days is to always be top of mind - i.e. at the top of people's social media feeds.

It's definitely not easy to post every day to multiple social platforms but your key to success in your design business is to be doing the things that others aren't willing to do!

Having a business is a big responsibility and you have to take it seriously if you want it to grow. If you don't put in serious effort, take action even when it scares you, get out of your comfort zone and push yourself really hard you're unlikely to see the results that you are hoping for.
