Fact: The client who pays the least will ask for the most

Fact: The client who pays the least will ask for the most

It might seem easier to get a low paying client than a high paying one, but often the low paying ones are MUCH harder work.

Here’s why 👇🏻👇🏻

✅ Value Perception:

Clients who are unwilling or unable to pay high rates for design work often don't fully understand the value of professional design services. They may not appreciate the time, effort or skill that goes into the work (and this can lead to unrealistic expectations).

✅ Limited Budgets:

A limited budget can sometimes mean limited resources for the project. It’s hard to develop a design you’ll be proud of if the budget is extremely limited.

✅ Communication Challenges:

Clients who aren't accustomed to working with professional designers may not know how to communicate their needs effectively or explain what they are looking for. This can lead to confusion, misunderstandings or more revisions than necessary.

✅ Scope Creep:

Lower paying clients might try to get the most out of their money, which can easily lead to scope creep. They might request additional features, revisions or elements that weren't agreed upon initially, which increases your workload.

✅ Lack of Trust:

Clients paying lower rates may not trust the designer's expertise as much. This can lead to micromanagement and a constant need for reassurances and updates.

✅ Lack of Professionalism:

Sometimes (but not always) lower paying clients may not have the same level of professionalism as higher paying ones. This could mean late payments, constant changes to the brief or other difficult behaviours to manage.

Higher paying clients often understand the value of design work, have clear goals and expectations, respect the designer's expertise and operate with a higher level of professionalism.

This isn't to say that all low paying clients are difficult or that all high paying clients are easy to work with.

But given that it’s the same amount of effort to find a low paying client as a high paying one, why go after the low paying ones????
